Abstract

The mode of occurrence, quality and rank characteristics of the coals of the Barjora basin is presented. The study reveals that the coals are high moisture, high volatile, non-coking and bituminous type. The phophorus, sulphur, carbonate and CO2 contents of the coals are uniformly low and are ideally suited for steam generation and as domestic fuel. The Barjora basin being unusually located in close proximity beyond the southern Boundary Fault of the Ranijanj Coalfield is a conspicuous feature of observation and the of considerable geological importance to reveal some interesting facts. The difference of thousands of metres in the level of occurrence of the Barakars in the adjacent Barjora and Raniganj basin clearly exhibits the magnitude of the structural play of the southern Boundary Fault and the immensity of the erosional agencies. The basin behaviour and coal properties of the Barjora basin show similarity to the Barakar outliers of the Trans-Ajoy sector and that of the easternmost region of the main Raniganj basin. An exploratory programme in the adjoining areas of these regions may reveal more areas of coal bearing strata underneath the laterite and alluvium tract of the east.
