Abstract

The paper presents a global review on the advances in the field of high temperature carbonization under various sub-areas. The contributions made by CFRI have been discussed and the scope of further co-ordinated work between research and industry has also been emphasised. Coal and its conversion into coke by the process of carbonization are subject matters of interest both for research and industry. It is an admitted fact that studies on coal pyrolysis are important and relevant as they provide a better understanding of what is going on during the coking process and the knowledge gained from such studies helps formulate plans for introducing newer technologies for meeting any exigency arising out of raw material problems, operational difficulties and for improving the quality of precuts obtained from the available raw materials. It is over sixty years since studies in the field of coking process commenced and published information [1-33] on coal pyrolysis and mechanism of coke formation are available in abundance. The studies were mainly concentrated in the areas given below: (i) Classification of coals with regard to their coking properties (ii) Preparation of coal charge and blending, (iii) Densification of charge, (iv) Preheating of coal charge for coking, (v) Improvement in oven design, (vi) Quenching of coke, and (vii) Testing of products.
