Abstract

It is quarter of a century ago when the mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil was first tried as blasting agent. Since that day ANFO, as it is popularly called, is going ahead with increasingly more demand for its economy and safety with no less efficiency which are the main causes of its popularity. So long, the use of ANFO was confined to open-cast mining, tunneling, excavation work etc. But for the short supply and the spiraling rise in prices of the high explosives throughout the world the day is not far when ANGO would be used for underground blasting in a big way in metal mines. In India the use of ANFO underground has already started and at present it is limited only to metal mines. The paper deals with the trial of ANFO blasting, charging system, hazards involved and their possible remedy, comparative efficiency and economy, safety factors and other operational practices for better and efficient utilization of ANFO underground.
