Abstract

Solvent refined coal (SRC) is a low-ash, low-sulphur and nonpolluting product which is produced under mild condition of coal-oil slurry-phase hydrogenation. Although the concept of coal refining is not new, in view of the prevailing oil crisis, it has become the subject of serious efforts in many countries. In this article, the development of processes for the production of SRC has been reviewed country wise. The work done at CFRI in this regard, is also briefly discussed. The SRC can be used as a substitute for fuel oil derived from petroleum. The potential uses of SRC for electrode carbon, hydrogenation to oil, high energy uniform fuel which could be used as solid or liquid for power generation, gasification, MHD, fuel cells etc., have been discussed. The technology of solvent refining of coal through dissolution could be applied to mining of certain types of coal. The economies of SRC process, as estimated by PAMCO, USA, reveal that cost of production would be about Rs. 320.00 per tonne of SRC.
