Abstract

In mining and allied industries where low-carbon mild-steel components are used, frequent failures have been experienced which caused interruption in the production. On preliminary investigations it was observed that the nature of fractures was of brittle type, though in general the mild-steel should exhibit a ductile fracture. These brittle type of fractures in mild steel components aroused much suspicion about their ageing and notch susceptibility. Therefore, a thorough investigation as to the behaviour of the materials, under different treatments was envisaged and a programme was made to improve the strength and ductility of the materials in combating brittle failures. It was clear from the investigations that above 0.27% carbon-equivalent mild steel did not show age-brittleness in terms of incremental hardness, whereas below this limit the ageing susceptible materials can be improved by special working techniques and subsequent heat-treatment.
