Abstract

A preliminary approach on the characterization of the different petrographic components, from the point of view of coking characteristics of Indian coking coals, is undertaken in this paper. Typical semifusinite and fusinite remained unchanged, while the material transitional between vitrinite and semi-fusinite (which may be best called as semi-vitrinite) became fused during the laboratory carbonisation test. The characterization and the correct estimation of this transitional material, which is present in quite substantial amounts in Indian coking coal, is imperative for the correlation and prediction of coke strength as well as other chemical parameters.
