Abstract

Studies regarding primary pyrolysis and secondary carbonization reaction of coal in relation to certain structural parameters are reviewed. The forms of carbon, dydrogen and oxygen in coal structure has been mentioned and the carbonization phenomena in the early stage, the kinetics during the plastic state and the formation and properties of semicoke and coke have been explained. The mechanism of formation of coke oven tar, major constituents of coke oven gas and the behaviour of nitrogen and sulphur in coal during pyrolysis have also been dealt with.
