Abstract

Success in dealing with subsidence impact assessment due to underground coal mining and cognate issues depends primarily on the prediction of the magnitude and spatial distributions of subsidence parameters. For Indian coalfields, a three-dimensional subsidence prediction methodology has been developed, described briefly in this paper. To apply this methodology, a simple procedure need to be followed consisting of some steps where “mining design” parameters are to be modified strategically and logically with due respect to “fixed” parameters. The steps are in sequence. This paper, by way of a demonstrative case-study with multi-seam extraction proposition, describes as to how the threshold maximum tensile strain of 20 mm/m (or e.g. any value) can be ensured with no adverse impact on the forest cover due to safe extraction of six coal seam belowground in succession.
