Abstract

The great retreat of the carboniferous glaciation heralded Gondwana sedimentation over the Indian Peninsula Shield along five well marked linear belts of intra-cratonic depression viz : Damodar-Koel velley, sons-Mahanadi valley, Wardha-Godavari valley, Satpura and Rajmahal areas. The strata are now found in over 70 separate (graben-type) coal basins. Although there is a broad similarity in the various lithofacies of the Gondwana sequence in all the basins, coal facies are particularly sensitive and very significantly with regard to their regional extent, thickness, these factors are mainly determined by the prevailing tectono-geomorphc history of the individual basin, which controlled the rates of subsidence and sedimentation. This resulted in variation in temperature and pressure conditions from place to place and at different statigraphic levels in the same basin, which ultimately led to the regional variation in the trend of coal metamorphism. The present paper is a summary of an exhaustive study on the above phenomena which essentially aims at establishing the regional trend of coal metamorphism in the major Gondwana coa basins of India. In general Gondwana coals of India can be broadly categorized as high moisture, high volatile and non-coking type in most of the basins. However, some basins, viz. Jharia, Raniganj, okaro and Ramgarh of Damodar valley have coals that matured to high rank bituminous type of coking nature. The regional coalification pattern has been studied by drawing several structural contour maps of important coal horizons and geological cross-sections of the major basins, over which iso-rank lines (considering suitable chemical parameters for different rank of coals) were superimposed. A remarkable overall concordant relationship is evident between the structural lines and the iso-rank lines in the individual basins. Also rank-depth relationship of these multi-seam sequences has been studied.
