Abstract

The geological setting of the Tertiary sequence in the north-western part of Rajasthan is presented with an emphasis on the depositional environment and resource quality potentiality of the lignite deposit of palana basin. The phsico-chemical properties of Palana lignite has been discussed considering the petrographic make-up, chemical composition, G. K. assay, ash composition, ash fusion characteristic and other relevant properties. The quality of Palana lignite is fairly good, as the ash content seldom exceeds 10.0 per cent. The rank study as observed from the reflectance measurements and elemental composition shows that these lignite are quite matured. Information on the recent find of new occurrences of lignite in Rajasthan has also been included. A reserve of about 28 million tones has already been estimated in the Palana basin. Further systematic exploration of all these palces, including the Palana basin, may reveal the actual resource potentiality of the fuel starved region the country.
