Abstract

The presently available technology very much allows the use of aluminium alloys as an alternative to steel for various industrial applications. Important characteristics accounted for in case of alloyed aluminium products are their lightness in weight, high mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance with reference to steel. But, the use of these alloys in a flammable gas atmoshphere should always be viewed with great caution as it introduces the risk of explosion owing to spark produced from the impact/friction of such alloys with rusty steel or other heavy metals. This paper reviews aluminium alloys of industrial importance and presents their typical characteristics so that their selection can be made to achieve the desired performance and economy. The mechanism of frictional spark ignition of flammable gases/vapours produced form the impact of these alloys is also discussed.
