Abstract

Deterioration in the integrity of rock mass resulting into reduction of rock mass classification is known as damage. Increase in excavated profile than the designed, resulting into extra muck removal or extra cost incurred in maintaining the designed profile with or without extension of scheduled time frame is known as overbreak. Considering causes of damage and overbreak, the paper4 communicates that excavation-induced stresses and under-estimation of support system results into overbreak for any structure. Low diameter blastholes and smaller depth of holes (maximum 3m) results into minimization of hole deviation and effective wall control. Use of long delay detonators effectively controls. Use of long delay detonators effectively controls borehole pressure and magnitude of overbreak. Face and blast geometry also impart into the quality of blast ad damage to peripheral rock mass.
