Abstract

Large diameter (60 mm-250 mm) deep holes (5-10 m or more) are drilled in opencast mine for bench blasting. This produces huge quantities of fine dust. This dust gets dispersed in mine atmosphere and its neighbouring places by natural ventilation. The mine dust is a potential hazard in many ways. The existing dust control devices are inadequate, and hence rarely seen in operation in mines. Besides they are costly, heavy and unwieldy. They also affect rate of drilling adversely. The “dust arrestor” designed and developed by Central Mining Research Station, Dhanbad is novel in concept and execution. The device is small, portable and cheap, yet robust and efficient. During test trials, an efficiency of over 99% for total dust, and 95 to 98% for respirable dust had been achieved.
