Photoelesticity is the science, art and technology for quantitative and qualitative measurement of stress in structure the aim of this paper is to compile the uses of photoelasticity in different fields of mining engineering. The technique has been used for study of subsidence phenomenon, rock fractures, in situ rock stresses and dynamic problem of blasting in mines. Two and three dimensional photoelastic models have been used to visualise stress parameters associated with pillar design, multisection workings and design of underground openings.
