Abstract

Computerisation needs of mining industry in terms of layered structure for computer aided mine management (CAMM) Suggested by the author has been briefly discussed. Layered structure of CAMM is based on subdivision of application layer of seven layered open system interconnect (OSI) recommended by International Standards Organisation (ISO) based recommended by International Standards Organisation (ISO) based on X.25 protocol. A critical examination of an open network of number of micro, super micro or mini computers as against a mainframe or super mini computer for covering entire computerisation need of an Indian mine has been presented. Advantages of network structure for distributed processing and distributed data bases have been mentioned. Possibilities of extending such networks to a sub-area or an area covering 3 to 10 mines have been described, as well as interconnection of such network to the national networks, with available gateways, have been explained. Futuristic approach for development of expert system for mining, having artificial intelligence at least in one of the super micro or mini computers has been elaborated.
