Abstract

Domodar river receives huge quantity of effluent discharged from coal industries. The present study consists of analysis of water samples of Damodar river water at coal washery effluent discharge sites in Dhanbad district, such as: Bowrah ghat (3 site), Maura ghat (3 site), Birsa bridge (3 site), Sudamdih (3 site), Bhojudih (3 site) for monitoring water quality. Water quality parameters: pH, EC, colour, total solids, volatile solids, hardness, chlorides, DO, BOD, COD, total nitrogen, active phosphorous, oil and grease, sulphate and alkalinity were carried out in the samples. The pH of the river water from different sites was in the range of 6.2-6.6 Total solids was maximum at Bowrah ghat site III (318 mg/L), followed by Sudamhid ghat site I (310 mg/L), and Birsa bridge site II (303.5 mg/L), whereas in other sites it was in the range of 242-282 mg/L. Total suspended solid of the river at Birsa bridge site I and II was 125 mg/L and 116 mg/L, at Sudamdih ghat site II (110 mg/L) and Bhojudih Rly bridge site III (108 mg/L). Total dissolved solid was observed maximum at Bowrah ghat site II and III (213 mg/L and 271.5 mg/L, Maura ghat site I and II (213 and 207.5 mg/L) and Sudamdih site I (200 mg/L). Dissolved oxygen of Damodar river water at different selected sites was observed in the range 11.11-6.5206 mg/L and it was above the permissible limit (optimum DO level is 4-6 mg/L). Oil and grease were higher in the Maura ghat site II (61.5 mg/L) and Birsa bridge site I (41.5 mg/L) than rest of the sites where it is in the range 10.8-55 mg/L. Maximum amount of BOD and COD were found at Maura ghat (site III), cremation site of Damodar river. BOD of Damodar water at dirrerent sites were 8.1961-0.5012 mg/L. COD of Damodar reiver water at different sites was in the range 123.0-10.0 mg/L
