Demarcation of unapproachable coal barrier between two adjacent mines intersected by old mine workings is a key issue for mine safety and flood-risk management. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) integrated with numerical modeling was applied to evaluate the status, thickness, and stability of the coal barrier pillar between Moonidih and Bhagabandh collieries of Jharia Coalfield, India. Six parallel 2D ERT profiles were acquired at 40 m spacing over a total length of 672 m using Dipole-Dipole and Pole-Dipole array configurations. ERT results reveal two prominent low-resistivity zones at surface distances of approximately 140–300 m and 470 m–670 m, extending to depths of 40 m − 157 m, which were interpreted as water-logged and disturbed strata over old depillared panels. In contrast, a continuous high-resistivity anomaly (200 Ω m − 2000 Ω m) identified between 340 m and 440 m indicates the presence of an intact coal barrier. This anomaly has an approximate width of 100 m at a depth of 157 m, corresponding to the estimated thickness of the barrier pillar. Numerical simulation results further demonstrate that the barrier between the XVII and XVI (Top) seams remains stable and is only marginally influenced by nearby excavation activities. The combined application of ERT and numerical modeling provides a reliable and cost-effective methodology for delineating coal barrier pillars and assessing flooding hazards risk associated with abandoned mine workings.
