Abstract

In response to the growing demand for metals, improving ore recovery has become imperative. The introduction of cemented backfilling technology has proven instrumental in achieving enhanced ore recovery while simultaneously enhancing ground stability. This advancement has enabled miners to operate under engineered stope roofs, significantly reducing ore loss in pillars. This paper presents an effective strategy for the extraction of a sill pillar located between two backfilled levels, employing three-dimensional numerical modelling. To mitigate uncertainties within the upper level backfill and to ensure safety during extraction, a partial extraction strategy for sill pillar recovery is devised. This strategy entails the implementation of rib pillars to separate the stoping blocks, applying the concept of 50% yielding pillars. For stopes situated below unconsolidated backfill, a thin vertical parting at the stope crown is designed, while stopes beneath consolidated pastefill undergo extraction without any parting. The successful implementation of this strategy at a mine site is detailed in this paper. Cavity monitoring surveys of the mined-out sill pillar stopes corroborate the stability scenario of the stoping blocks, aligning with the numerical modelling results. The safe and effective partial extraction of the sill pillar sets the stage for replicating this process in sill pillar extractions at lower levels of the mine. Field experience underscores the potential for further refinement of sill pillar extraction with the proper application of engineered backfill.
