This paper deals with the various emerging technology in coke oven practice to be adopted by SAIL for the targeted production of coke and saleable steel by 2000 A.D. The coking coal scenario, modern techniques of charge preparation and different processes of manufacture of coke are discussed in detail. The possible ways for reduction in coke rate with increase in blast furnace productivity are also indicated.
