Abstract

This paper presents the method of determination and the estimated in situ methane content of several virgin blocks in Indian coalfields. The methane content of the coalbeds has been observed to be generally low (<2m3/t) upto about 400 m of depth from surface. High concentration of methanc has been estimated in several coalbeds located in the south eastern part of the Jharia coalfield and the highest value of 14.93 m3/t has been obtained in parbatpur block where regression analysis of the relationship between gas content and depth of the overburden showed an increase of about 1.30 m3 per tonne of coal per 100 m increase in depth.
