By means of a cyclic loading in a uniaxial compression with the MTS 816 Rock Test system, the fatigue strength and fragmentation of sandstone was measured for a various loading frequencies and amplitude. It was found that fragmentation of the rock increased at low loading frequency than that at high loading frequency. Micro-observations for fractured rock specimens indicated that, in thin section prepared of a specimen subjected to a cyclic loading, there were clear crack branching or bifurcation, and the lower the loading frequency were, the more branching cracks were developed. Finally, some applications of this investigation in engineering practice were discussed.
