Different non-explosive methods of rock excavation are scientifically summarized in the context of environment friendly controlled blasting activities in sensitive and fragile areas. All such methods may not either be feasible or cost-effective at a particular site when considering deeper aspects of technology implementation, manpower, productivity and cost-effectiveness. However, in a non-conducive working atomsphere under repeated threats of the closure of operations, the management can give a second thought in a particular patch-work, using non-explosive methods of excavation. Under such circumstances, the present paper may help the reader for a better assessment.
