Abstract
Proper utilization of commercial explosives for mines ad quarries coupled with productivity, cost-effectiveness and environmental protection has become an essential part of rock engineering research and mining in particular. Besides a few scanty methods of rock breaking techniques, till date, commercial explosives are the cheapest and convenient means of achieving proper rock breakage. Utilizing commercial explosives, a blasting can be termed as optimum when safety and environmental needs are met with minimum operating cost while maximizing the extraction of rock deposits. To achieve this, an overall knowledge of the process of rock blasting techniques as well restriction imposed by the regulatory agency like DGMS (Directorate General of Mines Safety) are to be integrated essentially. Understanding its importance, the present paper briefs the overall safe procedures and guidelines to be followed for controlled blasting in Indian opencast mines, which would help practicing engineers to impose them in the actual field conditions.
