Abstract
The use of coal combustion residue as a backfill material in abandoned opencast and underground mines, low lying areas and subsided land offers an immense opportunity for its bulk use. Coal combustion residues are by-products of thermal power stations and are considered as a waste material. Coal combustion residues contain many chemical elements that may be potentially harmful to the environment. Coal combustion residue handling and disposal is a major problem from the environmental point of view. Understanding the metal leaching behavior requires comprehensive study on their leaching potential under varied conditions. So far, bulk use of coal combustion residues has not been rightly addressed in mining areas owing to people fear of contamination of ground water and/or surface water in long run due to such bulk disposal. The study here presents comprehensive leaching characteristics of coal combustion residues from few thermal power stations of India. The study was aimed to provide the database relevant to address the people fear on ground water and/or surface water contamination. The data generated from such study will be of immense help in finding its proper utilization in bulk especially in mining areas. The study has proved the coal combustion residues of the region to be environmentally safe with respect to leaching of trace and toxic elements when such materials are used in bulk as a fill material in mines or left in pond for long.
