Abstract

A correct knowledge of the yield of coke and of its physical properties is of great importance to all producers and consumers of coke. An assessment of the yield by weighing the coke produced and evaluation of the physical properties by carrying out physical tests of different types involve lengthy and laborious procedure. A formula is suggested for calculating the yield of coke from the proximate analysis of the coal carbonized, based on statistical analysis of pilot plant and full scale data. It is shown that this gives a closer fit compared to others employed abroad. Regression equations are derived for predicting the shatter, micum and haven indices of coke from a knowledge of heat of wetting and volatile matter of the coal carbonized. A relationship has also been obtained between micum and Breslau indices of coke.
