From the results of physical and chemical surveys of the Jhaia field coals, especially of the seams IX, X and XI which contain the chief future reserves of coking coals, the author has divided the coalfield into 4 zones according to volatile matter contents. The reasons for the variation in the nature of coals of the different zones are discussed. The evidence favours regional metamorphism as the cause of variation in proportion of these coals. Classification of coals on the lines suggested in the paper would considerably help in the rational preparation and distribution of coking coals for the various steel plants.
