Important developments in recent years towards devising suitable appliances for detection of methane in coal mines have been reviewed. Improvements as well as newly developed instruments have been especially considered. And then the present trends prevailing in different countries in the field of underground methanometry and the programmes planned for in different research institutions have been outlined. The most recent approach seems to be towards designing instruments for remote measurements of methane content and incorporating devices capable of disconnecting power from the electrical installations in case methane content exceeds a predetermined value.
