Based on the data obtained from physical and chemical survey of coal samples and from borehole coal cores, a study has been made of the regional variation of the properties of coals of Sohagpur and Chirimiri coalfields of Madhya Pradesh. It is seen that the coal seams occurring in these coalfields can be divided into two distinct groups having characteristic properties of their own. The group met with in the northern part is, in general, interbanded and has high ash percentage while that found in the southern part is comparatively cleaner containing coals of fair to good quality.
