The paper is based on observations on nine projects of industrial engineering type, carried out by the Operational Research Group of the Central Mining Research Station. The meaning and scope of the term productivity is explained. Some data regarding productivity in Indian coal mines are presented. The causes of low productivity are analysed and discussed under four headings, namely; lack of planning, lack of incentives, training and supervision and psychological causes. Although no concrete suggestions for improvements are made, one or two possibilities are mentioned.
