Basic concepts and scope of pre-reduction, direct reduction of iron ore and its agglomerates and rationale of an alternative steel route based on reduced stock have been discussed in the 1st part. In the 2nd part have been depicted rising world steel capacity and output, rising international steel trade, also and state of the industry in India and abroad. Trends in enlarging both company size and unit size, profitability on investment in steel, productivity, capital size, use of computer, importance of transport have been elucidated in the 3rd part. Scope of research and development, investment on return from research, important innovations have been discussed in the concluding portion.
