Three recent approaches to coal pillar design have been critically assessed and compared. The wide variation in pillar size as calculated by these methods is shown to be quite significant. The pillar size with regard to the weakest link theory is also obtained. A direct application of these formulae to Indian coals is stressed as not being possible and steps to solve the pillar design problem in India are suggested.
