Abstract

Filter typed self rescuer (FSR) and chemical type self contained self rescuer (SCSR) are used as an escape safety breathing apparatus. FSR converts poisonous CO into non-poisonous CO2 gas, more than the prescribed limit and till hopcalite (copper manganese oxide) CuMn2O4 is active where as SCSR generate pure oxygen till superoxide (KO2) is active in the canister. This paper deal with evaluation, limitation and properties of these two safety breathing apparatuses. IS 9563:1980, EN 401:1993, DGMS (Tech.) Circular No.2/999-1600/2007 and IS 15803:2008 are the standard procedures to conduct the performance evaluation. Vision for quality evaluation of safety breathing apparatuses needs more awareness. At the time of fire in underground coalmine safety breathing apparatuses protect workers from noxious gas and dust of underground coal mine fire and disaster afterward by rescue team.
