Abstract

Tunneling projects have become integral part of infrastructural development of power, irrigation and transportation sector. Although recent developments in tunnel boring machines shared much load of tunneling projects, drilling and blasting method of tunneling has become inevitable due to its operational flexibility and low capital cost. This paper deals with the brief review of some important aspects of tunneling from the blasting points of view. The paper also reviews the developments in rock mass damage and contour blasting. The main focus of this paper is on the contribution of CIMFR Regional central, Nagpur on specialized tunnel blasting techniques for improvement of productivity and safety in tunnel blasting, lake tap blasting, cautious blasting, in-hole delay blasting, bottom hole decking technique, sand stemming device for horizontal blast hole and computer aided blast design by using tunnel blast software.
