Abstract

Priority on coal R&D work is gaining more momentum depending on the deteriorating quality of coal now available and its likely availability by the turn of the century and current requirements of the industry. A resume on current activities on coal research and development undertaken in Central Fuel Research Institute, Dhanbad, has been presented along with the salient features of some of the work done earlier on various aspects of coal science and technology. Emphasis has been laid on thrust area R&D projects with mission orientation which have got direct bearing on Government policy and programme. Presently a good number of R&D project are being sponsored and funded by external agencies, e.g. Dept. of Coal, Dept. of Steel, etc. Necessity for adoption of modernization programme and emerging technologies on various aspects of coal technology has also been discussed. Trend of external cash flow during a span of last four years has shown promise to fulfil our commitments in due course of time.
