Abstract

Effect of temperature and viscosity on the flocculation of busseriya, Digwadih and Ramkanali coals by polymeric flocculants, viz. hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM), and califloc, was studied. The dependence of the viscosity of the medium on flocculant concentration and the pH was also investigated. It is found that higher temperatures adversely affect the flocculation and that variation in temperature alters the intrinsic viscosity of the polymers due to which settling rate changes. Likewise, a change in pH alters the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer which, in turn, affects the settling rate. Highest intrinsic viscosity and hence optimum flocculation was found to be at pH 7.0. The results are explained on the basis of the shortening of the root mean square end to end chain distance of the polymer due to increase in temperature. The results are also alternatively explained on the basis of electro viscous effects.
