A linear stability analysis of the collective Raman interaction in a free-electron laser with combined helical wiggler and guide magnetic fields is presented in the optical region. The analysis involves the kinetic description of the wave–particle interaction in the combined external fields. The full dispersion relation reducible to the Raman regime is obtained. The temporal and spatial growth rates are evaluated, and the results are discussed for the optical region.
