Abstract

The point load test is widely used to determine the uniaxial compressive strength indirectly because of its ease of testing simplicity of sample preparation and possible field application. Widely used correlations, between point load index and other geotechnical parameters exist. However, more experimental work helps to substantiate the existing correlations. NX size core sample of quartizites from an open pit in Rajasthan State of India were used for testing. The sample preparation and testing procedure were in accordance with ISRM (1981). Based on the present study the ratio between uniaxial compressive strength and point load for the quartzites of the copper mine is 23.37.
