Abstract

Several thousand million tonnes coal in thick seams is blocked up in India. Its extraction is posing a tough challenge to mining engineers. Extraction of thick seams during development on bord and pillar system is only up to 30-40% in most favourable condition. The prevailing depillaring methods applied for thick seam extraction are slow and unproductive. these methods often need support items like timber and sand, which are becoming scarce day be day. The coal industry was in search of a suitable productive method for extraction of thick coal seam. Charbonnage de France International (DdFI) proposed Blasting Gallery Method (BGM) as a viable method for extraction of thick seams. This method was tried in the country at East Katras colliery (BCCL) and Chora colliery (ECL). Story of most successful application of BGM was written in GDK-10 Incline of SCCL. Different aspects of this method, its application in these mines have been discussed in this paper.
