Abstract

This type of methanometers is perhaps being most widely used in the Indian coal mines today and hence it is felt that the users of such instruments must have a thorough knowledge not only of the working principles but also of the limitations of these methanometers. In this article the authors outline the measuring principle, the set-up of an optical interference methanometer, operation, maintenance and limitations of such instruments, effect of temperature and pressure on the instrument readings, colour changes of fringes and salient features of three types of commercial methanometers of this category. Riken gas indicator – Type 18, Toka gas indicators – S 10, Zeiss firedamp interferometer.
