A detailed petrographic study of coals from V, VI and VII seams of Pundi Block, West Bokaro Coalfield has been carried out. This not only covers the petrographic make up but also its sectional, depthwise and sectorwise variation. A variation in the vitrinite content has been observed in the coals which have also been found to be fairly rich in exinites. On the results obtained, attempts have been made to critically examine, some of the unexpected properties of these coals observed during large scale coking tests.
