Abstract

In course of the physical and chemical survey of coals from kasta seam, Raniganj Coalfield, it was observed that the properties of the coal substance and the quality of coal very abruptly from one area to another, one kilometer apart. Coals from the western part are better in quality and higher in rank than those form remaining eastern part. Such variation of properties observed in coals occurring in so close a proximity is far from normal. Higher moisture content of the coals form the eastern part is another peculiar feature not so far observed in coals from the Barakar Measure of the Raniganj coalfield. General lithological character of the seams concerned spore analysis mineral matter and petrographic make-up are different in case of coals from either side. Such nature of the coals can only be reconciled if it is proved that the seams are different, which opens the prospect of the existence of the reputed Kasta seam as observed in the western sector below the present workings of the other side. Further deep drilling in strategic positions only can confirm the view.
