Abstract

Petrological properties and environmental humidity have got a pronounced effect upon the tensile strength of sandstone. It had been observed that the tensile strength of sandstone depended upon the mineral composition and the quality and quantity of binding materials. Five different types of sandstones were kept for 120 days under humid atmosphere with relative humidity varying between 0 and 100 percent. The decrease in the value of tensile strength ranged between 11 and 48 percent under fully percent. The tensile strength was found to decrease with increase in humidity and porosity. However, it increased with increase with increase in the percentage of matrix.
