Abstract

Delay detonators, Delay Non Electric Detonates (NED), MS-connectors, Cord relays and Detonating fuse are extensively popular in Tunnel blasting and other excavation projects in India and abroad. The delay period of millisecond delay, half second delay of detonators and shock tube system are used to fire explosives in tunnel blasting to control over break, fly rock and to obtain optimum pull in tunnel blasting. Tunnel constructions are more popular in hydel projects, railways, roads and other construction work. The surface areas of tunnels are constructed by using control blasting by using drilling and blasting method the drill diameters are in between 32 to 50 mm. and length of holes are more than 2.5 m. In one round 100 to 250 kg explosives are fired in blasting operation. A study was conducted to improve explosive quality, blasting accessories and blast performance in Teesta III project Sikkim. The present study reveled that the quality explosives and delay detonators were not up to the satisfactory level. The delay interval of NED was found very poor. This may be was causes of poor blast and over break.
