Abstract

Some comments have been offered on the latest ISI classification of Indian coals, disagreeing with the adoption of some of the tests as parameters for the classification. A plea has been made for the inclusion of H.O.W. for grouping coals on the basis of their coking properties. The implication of oxidation/weathering of coals in performing laboratory tests and in the production of coke has been discussed. The importance of the adoption of some established known techniques in improving the physical properties of coke has been re-emphasied. Caution has been sounded against relying on the micro-strength tests on coke for assessing the physical properties of lump size coke.
