Abstract

This paper presents the results of investigation into dust problem associated with high speed multistage transportation of coal over long distances by conveyor belt system. The dust load of coal transported, the average mass of spillage of coal dust from conveyor transfer positions, and air borne dust concentrations around these positions are discussed. The dust load of the transported coal was found to be under 1% for – 500 micron (-0.5mm) fraction. The average spillage was estimated to be 0.05% of coal transported, while the average dust load in the respirable size range (-7 μ) of the total coal ttransported was between 0.01 to 0.0246%. the airborne respirable dust was also found to be inveribly on the high side as to warrant urgent attention for its control.
